The Half Pike Gold Medal Beanie

Halfpike Gold Medal Beanie, Celebrate Chloe Kim's Gold Medal, Free Crochet Pattern, Quick pattern using Bulky yarn

What an exciting moment it was to see Chloe Kim snowboard her way to the Half Pike Gold in the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympics!

It was a thrill to watch her third and final run! Knowing she had already taken the gold, she still gave it her all and topped her best score, proving she truly deserved the Half Pike Gold Medal!

A short time later at the snowboard park, the top three winners took the podium to be recognized for their win.  When she stood up on that stand to be recognized for taking the Half Pike Gold Medal, I was thrilled!  And…. I fell in love with the Hat she was wearing!!  I knew immediately that I had to create a pattern to make one similar looking.

And so….. here it is.  In honor of Chloe Kim winning the Gold Medal in the Half Pike in 2018, I give you:

THE HALF PIKE GOLD MEDAL BEANIE!

Gauge:

Using N-9mm Hook with Loops and Threads Charisma yarn
8 FDC plus 3 rows DC (8 stitches wide, 4 rows total) = 4″ high x 3 1/2″ wide swatch

Materials Used:

N-9mm Hook
Loops and Threads Charisma Yarn (Bulky weight 5) in Off White
Large Pom Pom maker
Scissors
Tapestry Needle for Yarn

Stitches Used:

Foundation Double Crochet (FDC)
Front Post Double Crochet  (FPDC)
Back Post Double Crochet   (BPDC)
FPDC Decrease
BPDC Decrease
Slip Stitch

Note: The slip stitch join at the beginning of each row will be done in the TOP of the first BPDC stitch.  The first BPDC stitch of each row (after row 2) will include stitching around the chain two stitch as well as the first BPDC, treating it as one stitch.  This eliminates an unsightly row of chain stitches up the back of the hat.

This pattern is worked from the bottom up and in the round.

NOTE:  Pattern adjustment stitch count for Red beanie using Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick yarn in Poinsettia noted in Red parenthesis.  See more info below.

Row 1 – Leaving a long tail on the slip knot, Begin with a Foundation Double Crochet (FDC) row of 44 st. (see instructional video here if unfamiliar with a FDC)  The First 3 chains made in the FDC count as first DC.  (44 st)  (40 st)

Row 2 – Slip stitch into top of chain 3 stitch.  Chain 2. BPDC around the chain three stitch, BPDC around next FDC stitch.  FPDC around next 2 FDC stitches. *BPDC around next 2 FDC stitches, FPDC around next 2 FDC stitches*  Repeat from * to * around.  Join with a Slip stitch into top of first BPDC stitch.  (44 st. —22 BPDC, 22 FPDC)   (40 st — 20 BPDC, 20 FPDC)

Row 3 – Chain 2. BPDC around the first BPDC AND the chain 2 stitch, treating it as one stitch.  BPDC around the next BPDC.  FPDC around next 2 FPDC.  *BPDC around next 2 BPDC, FPDC around next 2 FPDC*  Repeat from * to * around.  Join with a slip stitch into top of the first BPDC.  (44 st)  (40 st)

Row 4 -16  Repeat Row 3. (44 st)  (40 st)

Row 17 – Chain 2. *BPDC decrease on the 2 BPDC stitches. (Be sure to include the chain 2 on first stitch)  FPDC around next 2 FPDC stitches*  Repeat around.  Join with a slip stitch into top of the first BPDC.  (33 st) (22 FPDC, 11 BPDC)   (30 st — 20 FPDC, 10 BPDC)

Row 18 – Chain 2. *BPDC around the BPDC decrease stitch (include chain 2 on first stitch), FPDC around next 2 FPDC stitches.*  Repeat around.  Join with a slip stitch into top of the first BPDC.  (33 st) (22 FPDC, 11 BPDC)    (30 st — 20 FPDC, 10 BPDC)

Row 19 – Chain 2. *FPDC decrease around the BPDC and the first FPDC. (Include chain 2 stitch on the first stitch). FPDC around next FPDC.*  Repeat around.  Join with a slip stitch into top of the first FPDC.  (22 FPDC st)   (20 FPDC st)

Row 20 – Chain 2. FPDC decrease around the first two FPDC. (Include chain 2 stitch on the first stitch).  *FPDC decrease on the next 2 FPDC.*  Repeat around.  Join with a slip stitch into the top of the first FPDC and tie off leaving a long tail for cinching in the top of the hat.  (11 FPDC st)   (10 FPDC st)

Using tapestry needle and the long tail at top, weave in and out of the top of the FPDC stitches around and pull tightly to cinch in.  Push needle to the inside of the hat and continue to weave around the area you’ve just cinched in to keep the stitches tight.  Tie off and weave in ends.

Take the long tail from the beginning slip knot stitch and sew bottom of hat together.  Weave in ends and tie off.  This should complete the bottom of the hat.

When completed, Hat should measure about 11” from bottom to top.  Fold over bottom of hat about 2 1/2 inches to create a brim.  (This is where you would attach the label of your choice if desired.)  The hat should be about 8 1/2” tall with folded brim.

Make a large Pom Pom using Pom Pom maker ,or make a large floppy tassel, and attach to the top of the hat.

Creating the Gold USA Label:

UPDATE: At the time I created this hat in 2018, I wanted to mimic the USA label that was on Chloe’s hat, but I wanted to use gold lettering.  Even though the idea was fun, I have since come to love the hat with NO label on it at all. (Luckily…. I had just taped the label on the hat for my original photos.)  🙂

If you’re interested in adding a USA label, this is what I did. I just used iron on letters from Hobby Lobby and ironed them on a scrap piece of fabric and finished the edges of the fabric to not fray.

Personally…. I think if you have a Circuit or Silhouette machine, you could create the letters or design for your label to any size you’d like.  I’d love to see a label made that way!

NEW TUTORIAL VIDEO

Recently, I made a video of how to create the Half Pike Gold Beanie. I’d love for you to visit my YouTube channel and give it a thumbs up if you like it and Subscribe to my channel.  This helps to get my videos in front of more people. Thanks!

I had so much fun making this hat, I had to try it in other colors and wanted to use a Floppy tassel pom pom on it! (Which I have since used to replace the original pom pom on the white hat as you can see in the video thumbnail) Please see instructions below for more details on the red hat.

UPDATE ON BEANIE:

When I saw this wonderful Metallic Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick Yarn in Poinsettia, I knew I had to try this pattern using it!  Because it’s a Super Bulky weight 6 yarn, I needed to make some adjustments in the stitch count.  Since this is a pattern repeat of every 4 stitches, I dropped the stitch count down to 40 st. for the first row.  All other stitch count adjustments can be seen in RED in parenthesis.  This pattern could easily be adjusted to any yarn size or made smaller or bigger using the 4 stitch count adjustment change.

I love how this turned out and I really wanted to try a more floppy Pom Pom on it.  Love this look!  So much so, that I made a new floppy Pom Pom for my original!  LOL
